Since 1988, Hylunia has been dedicated to researching and developing skincare products that minimize irritation, inflammation, and free radical damage. It has been known for many years that free radical/DNA damage leads to premature aging and can potentially lead to cancer.
A five-year study conducted by a respected dermatologist and published in The Journal of The American Academy Of Dermatology linked contact dermatitis (inflammation) to fragrance/parfum, parabens, lanolin and its derivatives, dyes, and propylene glycol.

Scientific studies began to show a clear link between parabens and cancer
In 1987, a research team headed by Brian Jegasothy, M.D, (former Chairman of the Department of Dermatology at The University of Pittsburgh), started research to develop a skincare product for the sensitive skin of Vyrhi Lingam’s (Dr.Lingam) daughter.
4-Dioxane: This chemical by-product isn’t included on many ingredient lists. It’s produced by the ethoxylation process in cosmetics manufacturing. It’s a known carcinogen and penetrates readily into the skin. More than 56 cosmetic ingredients are associated with this chemical.
Disodium-EDTA: Used in cosmetics and personal care products as a penetration enhancer, Disodium-EDTA allows other chemicals to penetrate deeper into the skin. It’s also a “chelating” agent that improves the performance of cleansing products. High doses have been shown to disrupt hormone function and mutate cells
Ethyl acetate:This flammable liquid is commonly used as a solvent in many cosmetics and personal care products. It’s also used in paint remover and dishwashing liquid. Listed on the EPA’s Hazardous Waste list, it’s known to cause eye irritation, respiratory distress and may potentially impact the nervous system.
Hydroquinone: This lightening compound inhibits the production of skin pigmentation. It has been found to be mutagenic (possibly carcinogenic) and can cause contact dermatitis as well as degeneration of collagen and elastin fibers. Studies have shown it affects the liver at low doses. It is banned in the European Union.
Urea: These synthetic ingredients are widely used as preservatives as well as water-binding and exfoliating ingredients. (Also known as diazolidinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea, or DMDM hydantoin and sodium hydroxymethylglycinate.) The American Academy of Dermatology has found them to be a primary cause for contact dermatitis. Urea has also been shown to release formaldehyde. Non-synthetic forms of urea are derived from animal urine.
Parabens: Preservatives such as parabens (Methyl, Ethyl, Propyl and Butylparaben) are found in 95% of all personal care products. Parabens mimic estrogen and are linked to breast cancer, lowered sperm count, lowered testosterone levels, testicular atrophy, infertility, increased chances for testicular cancer, and undescended testes.
Formaldehyde: Diazolidinyl Urea, Imidazolidinyl Urea and Quaternium 15 are widely used as preservatives. They decompose into formaldehyde and are considered carcinogens.
Grapefruit Seed Extract: The chemical structure of grapefruit seed extract is similar to that of parabens.
Phthalate: Dibutyl Phthalate is linked to cancer and is present in nail polish, perfume, soft plastics, and skincare products.
Triclosan and Resorcinol: Used as an anti-bacterial agent and a preservative, these ingredients are known to be hormonal disrupters.
Laureth Sulfate and Polysorbate: Cleansing agents Sodium / Ammonium Laureth / Laurel Sulfate and Polysorbate may contain carcinogens such as Ethylene Oxide and Dioxane.
Diethanolamine (DEA): Cleansing agents such as DEA and its derivatives like DEA Sodium Laural Sulfate are considered carcinogens.
Propylene Glycol: Propylene Glycol, a commonly used solvent and humectant, is a known allergen and may be contaminated with carcinogens such as Ethylene Oxide and Dioxane. Pesticide Pesticides, like parabens, are hormonal disrupters and are linked to cancer.
Dye: Some FD&C and D&C dyes are considered carcinogens.
Fragrance: Fragrance causes inflammation and slows the wound healing process. Additionally, almost 5,000 chemicals used in fragrance can react with other ingredients in skincare products to become indirect carcinogens.
Nitrite: Nitrite present in skincare or food can react with other ingredients to form nitrosamine, a carcinogen.
Lead, Mercury and Arsenic: Heavy metals affect the nervous system and are considered neurotoxins.
Lanolin: Lanolin, derived from sheep, can be an endocrine disrupter because carcinogens such as dioxane and DDT may be present in the grass that the sheep ingest.
Alcohol: Alcohol dries and irritates the skin which causes inflammation.
Cruelty: Hylunia products are not tested on animals.
